White Tongue

White tongue is not a condition often talked about as much as bad breath or oral hygiene and yet it is a very common condition indeed. To avoid the furry tongue concern happening to you there are some things you can do. White tongue can be caused by many things of which most are harmless, but coating on the tongue of white matter can also indicate other serious diseases. It is always in your best interest health wise to be aware of these conditions so you can keep on top, meaning, knowing how to treat and prevent particular conditions of the mouth from occurring

A healthy tongue is pink in color, and should it change in color then it’s not normal and needs checking out due to the fact it could be a result of a serious condition other than one of being harmless.

The surface of the tongue is covered with finger-like projections called papillae. If your tongue shows sighting of white material covering it, then inflammation of the papillae may have happened. Dead bacteria/cells that get stuck among the papillae are usually reason for whiteness. Oral thrush is more aggressive looking in its appearance. It is more like a thick coating of clotted cheesy white patches. Oral thrush is a type of yeast infection (Candida albicans) and more recognized in new born infants, old people, diabetics and people with immune deficiencies. Specific medications (antibiotics and chemotherapy) can cause thrush in the mouth. Another common condition that brings the symptom of white tongue is leukoplakia which is caused by an extreme overgrowth of cells in the mouth.

The reason why people come looking for treatment for this problem is usually due to embarrassment. To be honest this shouldn’t be the reason…first and foremost priority should be in regards to your health. Some conditions where white tongue has been present are more serious than the patient anticipated. Certain conditions of the mouth can bring oral cancers.

If Oral Lichen Planus has been diagnosed then appearance is normally lacy or several raised white lines. For the less worrying forms of the condition, it can be cleared up with simple brushing of the tongue with a toothbrush and toothpaste, or specific solutions created solely for this purpose. If you start to feel pain or see sores developing in the mouth or back of the throat have your GP look you over. Particular diseases can have similar symptoms that won’t go away simply by brushing with a tooth brush.

A furry white tongue could be a result of dehydration or a Yeast infection.

Thrush is an infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans, the same fungi which is accountable for yeast infections.

Symptoms of thrush:

Tongue covered in white patches

Cheek whiteness on the inside

Smooth clotted like sores

Pain in the mouth and throat

Mouth and throat burning

Unpleasant taste in the mouth

Can’t taste your food

Some people have a furry tongue for no reason and clear it by scrubbing their tongue. This is fine if it goes, but should the coating stay stubborn and causing discomfort seek medical attention.
