Why are folk turning to wearing contact lenses? A big majority of women and men feel that they are making a spectacle of themselves (excuse the pun) by wearing glasses, however with today’s designs this could not be far from the truth. People are now torn between contact lenses and the sexy sophisticated framed optical aids.
Contact lenses are medical devices which can impose certain risks. If you are contemplating in wearing contact lenses then you need to minimize any risks that can affect your eyesight (vision). We are all aware of the obvious reason behind why people wear contact lenses and that is to correct their sight. People pick contact lenses over guilt edged gold framed glasses or refractive eye surgery (which corrects the shape of the cornea) because of their involvement with a type of sport or more so because of appearance.
To describe what contact lenses look like will depend on how an individual sees them. They look similar to tiny saucer-shaped pieces of plastic and very hard to find should you drop one. These are then placed on the cornea of the eyes and float on a thin layer of tear fluid where the lenses then helps provide better vision than that of ordinary eye glasses that we are all accustomed too. There are many different types and size of contact lenses as well as colour.
Hard lenses are created from firm polymer plastic material. The hard lens type is much easier to take care of - as in i.e. keeping clean because of the materials used in there creation. Because of the polymer plastic material the lenses are less likely to absorb foreign material from the eye or foreign aliens floating in the air. When a person retires to bed - hard lenses must be removed. The risk if not removed is restriction on the flow of oxygen to the cornea which evidently needs oxygen to stay healthy. Never treat the eyes with any over the counter medication until you speak with a doctor or optician. The eyes and the surrounding skin are very sensitive.
Soft Lenses
Soft lenses are less durable, but the added bonus here is the soft lens is far more comfortable because of the softer plastic called hydrogel. Soft lenses contain a higher percentage of water which allows a better flow of oxygen to the cornea. However in saying that there is a down side to the soft lenses where the material used is more porous so therefore increases the risk of an infection setting in. Infections can be caused by bacteria dust and protein. To prevent eye irritation or infection soft contact lenses should be removed from the eye when going to bed.
Find out more on other types of contact lenses by talking to your doctor or eye specialist. The most common eye problem symptoms experienced by contact lens wearers is excess tearing, itching, burning, sensitivity to light, dryness, and occasional blurred or distorted vision which is not a good sign and should always be checked out. Conditions as such can worsen because of neglect i.e. improper care or cleaning. Never use another user’s eye aids because this is not a healthy.
Why not take trip down to the opticians to see what designs are available in reading glasses or everyday seeing aids, if you are unsure of the whole concept of wearing contact lenses. Do not worry as the days of the monocle are long gone so you will not be presented with the one eye optical correction piece.
